New to DND, playing lvl 3 warlock as my first character.
I'm using this version of True Strike:
"Guided by a flash of magical insight, you make one attack with the weapon used in the spell’s casting. The attack uses your spellcasting ability for the attack and damage rolls instead of using Strength or Dexterity. If the attack deals damage, it can be Radiant damage or the weapon’s normal damage type (your choice)."
And I want to use it with this weapon:
"Dragon Slayer Greatsword - You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. When you hit a dragon with this weapon, the dragon takes an extra 3d6 slashing damage."
My spell modifier is +2, and my spell attack is +4. What do I add to attack rolls, and how much damage should it do?
Also, since true strike uses the same action as the attack, should true strike be used everytime I use a weapon? And if so, should I customize the attack bonus and damage bonus to account for that?
So, first off: True Strike requires that you be using a weapon that you have proficiency with. Warlocks typically do not have proficiency with greatswords, so you wouldn't be able to use this spell with this weapon unless you were given that proficiency by some other source.
But, assuming you did have proficiency with this weapon, then in your example, you add +5 to your attack rolls. That's +2 from your proficiency bonus, +2 from your spellcasting ability modifier, and +1 because the magic weapon has a +1 bonus itself.
When used with True Strike, this weapon deals 2d6+3 damage. That's 2d6 just for being a greatsword, plus 2 from your spellcasting ability modifier, plus 1 because the magic weapon has a +1 bonus itself. If you were attacking a dragon, it would deal 5d6+3 damage, because of the extra 3d6 damage this particular type of weapon deals against dragons.
True Strike doesn't use the same action as a normal attack with the weapon would (Magic action vs. Attack action) and you can't use it on things like opportunity attacks, so it might be worth having two separate actions on your character sheet for it.
Thank you so much!! I did notice the proficiency thing, so I've been considering multiclassing into fighter or taking the Weapon Master Feat. I really appreciate the help!!
You will need to create a True Strike weapon, just add a new weapon to you inventory and change it sname to Great Sword True Strike. dndbeyond thinks that'a a strength weapon so you'll need to change to hit and damage to get it to roll right. My version with Beyond 20 nstalled gives a True strike clickable over on the right when you click the weapon and it includes the spellcasting damage. Depending in what you're doing you may have to adjust to hit and/or damage up or down to make sure it's rolling what you want.
