If a character has the Magic Initiate (Druid) feat from the Guide background and takes magic Initiate (Cleric) from the Human Versatile feature could they take Cure Wounds for both feats to get two free casting of it per day?
Sure, I don't see why not. It says you can't choose the same spell list more than once, but it doesn't say you can't choose the same spell more than once.
I would add, however, those free castings are only at level 1. You can upcast it with spell slots, but the free one stays as a level 1 spell. At least that’s my understanding of how it works.

Yeah, that’s correct. Spells cast without a spell slot are always at the minimum level.
Even if that's possible, I feel like that's a little bit of a waste, because the MI spells are always prepared, so that would be one fewer prepared spell. Instead, I'd consider grabbing Healing Word for one of the Magic Initiate spells, so you'll have both a short range and long range healing spell count as always prepared, so you can choose something else to hold on to.
However, if you're not playing a spellcaster, and don't care about prepared spells, taking the more powerful once twice would make sense.

true but a level 1 cure wounds is surprisingly effective now. it is a pretty big hit point swing even into tier 2.

I don't even take cure wounds on my Clerics
