I have a question. The life domain cleric has the disciple of life feature that says (Also starting at 1st level, your healing spells are more effective. Whenever you use a spell of 1st level or higher to restore hit points to a creature, the creature regains additional hit points equal to 2 + the spell’s level.)
The question is the following. When I cast a level 1 spell with a level 2 slot do I get a +1 or a +2 bonus?
I understand that the feature specifically says “spell level” and not “slot’s level” but as I understand the spellcasting in general, when you use a higher slot for a spell the spell is considered for all intents and purposes as a higher level spell.
Now, the default bonuses when you cast a spell via the character sheet in dnd beyond is the one of the original level no matter what slot you are using. Is that correct or is it something it need to be corrected?
When a spellcaster casts a spell using a slot that is of a higher level than the spell, the spell takes on the higher level for that casting. For instance, if a Wizard casts Magic Missile using a level 2 slot, that Magic Missile is level 2. Effectively, the spell expands to fill the slot it is put into.
Some spells, such as Magic Missile and Cure Wounds, have more powerful effects when cast at a higher level, as detailed in a spell’s description.
A level 1 healing spell cast with a level 2 spell slot will grant 4 (2 + 2) additional hit points.
