I'm trying to create my very first ever character: a "good" Drow fighter. I have a question about Drow society. How are Drow of "low birth" organized? 'Cause I want to have a Drow fighter of "low birth" and I can't figure out if that's possible or not. Also the character builder says: "The cult of the god Lolth, Queen of Spiders, has corrupted some of the oldest drow cities, especially in the worlds of Oerth and Toril. Eberron, Krynn, and other realms have escaped the cult’s influence—for now. Wherever the cult lurks, drow heroes stand on the front lines in the war against it, seeking to sunder Lolth’s web." Is that right? The Monster Manual didn't say anything about that.
Talk to your DM. They’ll work with you about how it works in their world.
Oh. Don't have one of those - yet. I'm still just trying to create a character. It's been slow going and sometimes It feels like I've been reading all these books upside down. lol

Then do not worry about lore at all if you’re just making characters for fun. You might not even be in the FR when you start playing, and that’s what the generic lore applies to. Really, finding a group is step one before you make a character. The group will almost certainly have house rules about it. .

Oh. I wanted to make a character to play. I think I did manage to figure out most of the non lore stuff out. What you says does make sense, I guess I'll go look for a group then. Do have any suggestions for some good places look? Also, what is FR?
There’s a looking for group board here. Otherwise, try game shops near where you live.
FR is Forgotten Realms.
Oh, that all makes sense. Sadly, visiting a game shop is impossible due to poor health. My best bet is going be finding an online group. Thanks for all your help. :D
Even in the Forgotten Realms there is enough variation. Generally “low birth” Drow males are trained as fighters, unless they show considerable magical talent. And not all Drow cities are controlled by Lolth worshipers. The best example is Sshamath which overthrew the lady priestesses long ago and is a male dominated city with open worship of Verhaun and Ellistraee and banned worship of Lolth. Base your character out of Sshamath and it’s pretty open what you can do.
Cool, that's good to know. Through I'm leaning towards my character being from a that was free from Lolth worship, but fell to it during his childhood. Are there any cities like that? Also, what happens to female Drow of common birth?
I looked up those gods you mentioned, and Eilistraee looks like good match for my character.
Low status females are also typically clerics but never get many chances to advance - they are used to keep the men in line. Socially, under Lolth worship, men are second class citizens to begin with with even low status women technically superior to all but the most elite men. The only city I know of in FR that is free from official Lolth worship and control is Sshamath. There are a couple of possible surface cities that would actually have Drow, one is supposedly up in the high ice and never went underground and never worshipped Lolth. The second I’ve never read much about and the third is the returned Meyeritarian city of Rymathiin (spelling?) that Khelbin gave his life to return and hide. Its citizens are a mix of elven racial types with most of the Dark elves actually having transformed into Sharn to avoid becoming drow.

The beauty of it is that you can just make one up: the game does not list 100% of all settlements in existence anywhere, so you're just fine with creating your own small city that's from off in a dusty corner which was never significant and got wiped out.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

Yeah, I was guessing I'd have to do that. 🙂 I just thought that I might of missed something in the official canon (there's so much lol).

P.S Sorry if I posted this in the wrong place.

It's fun to use existing canon, but it deliberately has gaps in it for players and GMs to insert their own stuff, too.
