In summary, the player character can resist the curse or embrace it. Whether a character that embraces the lycanthropy curse becomes an npc monster is up to the DM, though I strongly suggest that any player is informed of this before their character makes their decision.
Given the huge boost to power from being a lycanthrope, especially the immunity non-magical/silver weapons, it's generally recommended that the character become an NPC if they aren't trying to get cured. The Bloodhunter class has a Order of the Lycan subclass that let's you dole out lycanthropy in a controllable manner

Are there any rules for characters that contract the lycanthropy disease? Do they automatically become NPC's? are there any stat changes?
Would like to know how others have dealt with this issue.
