yea so i recently started playing in my schools table top gaming club and im learning the mechanics but i really need help cuz i get the stuff and im learning and im told im doing good but im pretty sure im playing bard wrong
If you’re having fun then you’re playing the right way. There is no right or wrong way to play D&D, that’s one of the great things about it! Welcome to the hobby and have fun!
There's no right and wrong way to play any class, or the game itself, as long as everyone is having fun. But if you're looking for ideas then the bard is often called a support class, using buffing spells and abilities to empower allies. Perhaps if your character decided that they mainly involve themselves in fights by subtle manipulation rather than direct combat? You could cast spells to power up your friends, and distract the enemy, and use your class feature musical abilities the same. The cantrip Vicious Mockery could be a similar indirect tool you use. Only pull out the blades or crossbow and leap into battle to defend yourself or your sister.
Is your "sister" another character in the party? If so, then make sure that player knows how your character works, so that player can ask you to do something important and it gives your character the motivation needed. Or if the sister is an NPC or a part of your backstory, then let the DM know that you would love it for the sister to feature in the game as motivation for your character. A cooperative DM could bring in a kidnapping storyline, or a sickness that needs curing, or any number of complications to drag your character deeper into the tale you are creating together.
yea my "sister" is a member of my party and is very aware how my character works as she had to help me make it and yea thx it is incorporated into both of our backgrounds and Vicious Mockery is my favorite cantrip you basically just swear the person to death

Okay, previous advice aside, what is your PC concept and how do you see that character acting?
well my character is a talented musician with a dark sense of humor who like to sit back and enjoy the fun until their "sister" is effected

Sounds like you are doing OK so far though.
