So I was looking into making an Order of Scribes Wizard, and I was curious about how part of the Awakened Spellbook works with Chromatic Orb.
The text says "When you cast a wizard spell with a spell slot, you can temporarily replace its damage type with a type that appears in another spell in your spellbook, which magically alters the spell’s formula for this casting only. The latter spell must be of the same level as the spell slot you expend".
So if my wizard has both Burning Hands and Chromatic Orb, would I potentially be able to use any damage type that Chromatic Orb offers as a 15-foot cone, as per Burning Hands?
Just curious if I would be allowed to choose, say, a 15-foot cone of changing elemental damage if I took both spells or not. What do you think?

The others covered your question already, but I just want to point out to you that going the other way - replacing the damage type chromatic orb deals - isn't solvable in the general case because "its damage type" is poorly defined for a great many spells. You'll have to ask your DM how to handle them. As an example spell which is relatively tame compared to some of the weirder weeds out there, Protection from Energy will require a ruling.
Most of these because they offer several elemental types in one spell known. But honorable mention on dimension door for sneaking force damage into 4th level spells.

Yup, that's exactly how it works!

Yep. Freezing hands, lightning hands, booming hands, etc. Just remember it only applies to spells cast at level 1.

Chromatic orb is a solid choice but there are many others that are good for the same reason, some good scribes options are:
