Last session, my players needed to sneak past a group of guards with at least 2 heavily armored characters. They decided to have the rogue put the other 3 party members (human fighter, gnome artificer, human sorcerer/cleric) into her bag of holding, and carry them with her as she avoided the guards. I allowed it because I didn't want to stop the game for a lengthy rule consultation, but I did tell them I would be doing further research. My questions are:
Does it work to carry people in a bag of holding?
Can people fit in the entrance to a bag of holding?
How many characters can reasonably fit in there at a time (keeping in mind the small gnome)?
Any other reasons this would or would not work?
I know the length of time living things can survive in a bag of holding, and that time was not exceeded for the mission.
One additional question, raised by my players:
If we summon water into the bag of holding and cast water breathing, can we survive in there indefinitely? (My first instinct is a hard no with points for creativity, but what do you think?)
A bag of holding can only hold 500 pounds. Three characters, two of whom are heavily armored, and all their equipment, almost certainly exceeds that. That’s the primary concern, not volume (64 cubic feet is plenty of space for a few humanoid creatures). And three of them can only last three minutes and twenty seconds.
As for water breathing, no. They’re not underwater, and filling the bag with water doesn’t increase the amount of air, so they wouldn’t drown, but they'd still start suffocating after three minutes and twenty seconds.
Air bubble would solve the air problem, but the weight limit still keeps the plan from bei long feasible.

They also discussed going one at a time and having the rogue go back and forth three times if all of them at once didn’t work. Would that work for the weight limit?

Only spilt the party if you see something shiny.
