I know how Dread Ambusher interacts in round one. But my question is this. Does a surprise round count as round one, or is it round one of the initiative order?
in 5e, there is no surprise round. Instead, in the first round of combat, certain characters, enemies, NPCs, etc. may be surprised. In other words, if there are people who are surprised, the ambushing will all happen in round one.
On the other hand if the gloom stalker is surprised they lose their chance to ambush.

"At the start of your first turn of each combat,"
it doesn't matter if you're late to combat, or the first one to attack. Gloom Stalkers ALWAYS get their dread ambusher on their first turn of each combat.
8Pack, as pointed out by JCAUDM, there is no such thing as a surprise round, and everyone takes a turn in the first round of combat. If the gloomstalker is surprised, they still get a turn in the first round of combat, but spend that round doing nothing, thus missing their chance to ambush.

After re-reading page 189. I stand corrected. They will not "always" get their dread ambusher.
Although taking the alert feat will prevent that example from occurring, although not being asleep at the start of combat, paralysed, glued to a wall (dont ask) etc.
If your not conscious at the start of the fight, getting to attack at all in the first round is unlikely :) You would have to be awoken and have rolled lower on the initiative order than when you were woken to avoid missing your go if you werent also surprised. (Weapon of warning might help depending on why you were unconscious here and prevents surprise)

Sorry if this has been asked already.

I'm going to make this way harder than it needs to be.

Ah yes, but a Gloomstalker with Alert...now he can't be surprised.
As long as you're conscious
