Hi all! Been playing a half-orc barbarian, and I have chosen the Path of the Totem Warrior !! RAAWR This enables me to cast both Speak with Animals & Beast sense as rituals (although beast sense does not appear in my class features, while Speak w animals does?) ANYWAY, My question was around the ritual aspect. So it takes 10 minutes cast this spell as a ritual, but I was asked by my DM to investigate whether this is a ritual that needs to be performed on (in close proximity) to the target animal, or could I prepare it before (at the tavern for example) and use it as & when I choose?
Additional context if that wasn't clear. There are wolves in a cave and it would be advantageous to our party if I were able to speak to them. I wanted to prepare/perform the ritual at the tavern we are staying before we leave, so that when we reach the cave I could speak to the animals, but DM says that I need to spend that ritual casting time WITH the animal.
I reasoned that since the spell has a range of SELF, that I am casting it upon myself and there is no effect on the animal, and I wouldn't need to be with it. The spell has a duration of 10 min, does that mean that immediately after performing the ritual, it expires within 10 min?
Thanks for the help in advance, I hope this isn't repeated content, I tried to find a thread that resolved it. x
Casting a spell as a ritual just means you cast the spell without expending a spell slot and with a cast time of 10 minutes longer than usual. For your purposes, you are casting the spell, not preparing it. Beast sense definitely needs an animal in touch range. Speak with animals is just on yourself, but for the ten minute expenditure, you had better know you might be talking to an animal.
Also, I actually think it better not to revive old threads if at all possible.

You are right, Speak with Animals has a range of Self, that means you cast upon yourself. The animals do not need to be around during the casting.
Yes, after 10 minutes of casting, the duration of the spells is 10 minutes.

Thanks that perfectly answers my question.
