Hey All, my hexblade has recently come into possession of a Ring of Spell Storage. The ring can hold up to 5 levels of spells, but my warlock casts spells at level 3. Obviously the full spell slot will be consumed as normal, but if I say cast Shield into the ring, would it take up 3 levels within the ring or just 1? Many thanks for the help!
The ring of spell storing is not a great fit for a Warlock for the reason you just mentioned. Also, something like the Pearl of Power has problems beyond a certain point for Warlocks.
Unfortunately since you are casting the spell into the ring using a 3rd level spell slot, it will take up 3 levels. The ring of spell storing isn't really focused on warlocks, but for the classes that have many spell slots at their disposal.
The thing with Ring of Spell Storing and similar items is you need to ask the question: "Who has to be attuned?".
With the Ring of Spell Storing, the person using the spell has to be attuned to the ring. The person casting the spell into the ring does NOT have to be attuned. You own the ring, you wear the ring, but other people should be casting into it.
A Warlock should never put a spell into the Ring. Instead, a friendly caster should do it. When to do it is more complex. Typically it is done just before people rest to recover spell slots.
Note, there are a lot of similar items that are not identical. For example, a Spell Gem ( Out of The Abyss, Infernal Machine Rebuild) is reversed. The person putting the spell into the item must be attuned but the holder does not.
I agree, I love a Ring of Spell Storing for a Warlock or a PC with no spell casting ability. Have the spell casters in the group fill it with 1st and 2nd level spells and it’s much more effective than it is if it’s owned by a normal spell caster!!

Sometimes it just be like that.
