I have a player that is carrying 288lb of gear. some of which is in his bag of holding. They are in a rough town and are more than likely to get robbed. So I need to know what is in the bag for both if stolen and for his weight limit. I wish there was a way to show what is in his bag and what he has on his person.
I think that containers was a sheet feature that was being discussed by dndbeyond, especially so that BoH weight can automatically be applied to inventory items.
In the absence of that though, there's a couple easy solutions:
The first is to use the "other possessions" tab to type out everything that is in the bag of holding, and leave the rest of the normal inventory list as non-bag carried items. The "other possessions" tab doesn't apply to your weight calculation.
The other is to add a "custom item," name it Bag of Holding, and then in its custom description type out all of its contents. You can assign a single weight to the bag, and type out weights of items inside but they won't apply to the weight calculation.
I think those are the easiest solutions, but there's probably other notes/description fields you can find tucked around to do something similar as well.

I'm going to make this way harder than it needs to be.
I guess for now I'll have them use one of those methods. I hope they have a container tab in inventory soon. It would help a ton.
Containers is the number one reason I'm still using my ancient copy of the Forged Anvil spreadsheet.
I'd love to see the following:
