We are currently having a debate about how Spell Sculpting works.
Scenario: I'm an Evoker wizard, and I cast fireball into room that has a bunch of enemies and a fellow PC. I want to cast the fireball around my fellow PC. Here is how the rules are written:
The chosen creatures automatically succeed on their saving throws against the spell, and they take no damage if they would normally take half damage on a successful save.
I interpret that as, the PC would automatically make his DEX save, and since he made his save (which would normally result in half damage), he takes 0 damage.
However, someone thinks it means they still have to roll a saving throw, and if they fail, they take 1/2 damage, if they succeed they take 0 damage (similar to Rogue's evasion). I just can't get that same interpretation from the text.
What do you all say?
Question part 2: if there is a reason that the creature wouldn't normally get a chance to make a saving throw (e.g., they are unconscious) what then? Do they just take full damage no matter what, or do they take 1/2 damage?

No, they automatically succeed and take 0 damage.

I sing to life and to its tragic beauty To pain and to strife, but all that dances through me The rise and the fall, I've lived through it all!
I think the part of the Sculpt Spell text that says "automatically succeed on their saving throws" is difficult to miss, or misinterpret. Maybe you should try marking it up with a highlighter before asking your friend to read it again.
