Is there any spell that would potentially disorient a party and make it so that they may not realize that they are going through a loop of doors, being made to think they're going down a straight line or at minimum, a series of circular hallways? I'm planning something for a group and realized I could potentially build a short encounter and have it be a little longer if I made a looping 'trap' that made them think they were going down an extremely long hallway.
Some enchantment or illusion magic. I dont know if there is a specific spell that already matches, but you can just make up a non-spell magic. It should probably have a WIS save.
I imagine it'd be a perception/intelligence check to do it, with a somewhat lower DC to realize that something's up, with a higher DC(potential actual spell DC) to catch the illusion and the actual door out.
Your idea sounds like a good start of a Complex Trap from Xanathar's Guide. The first thing that came to mind was the Sphere of Crushing Doom example, but you were probably more expecting them not to realize they are lost and running in circles.
You could use the stats for Hallucinatory Terrain for the spell, probably, since it fits the impression, if not the appearance, of what you are trying to do.
I considered as much, but I thought that it may not work since my original idea involved square rooms, it'd be tough to convince someone they were proceeding forward or going up or down stairs if the spell only made the general appearance change, and not the perception of travel itself(i.e. not only make it seem like the only other door is in front of them, but as they went towards it, find themselves actually making a left without realizing to go through a door that'd continue them through a loop). I realized however I could probably also achieve this through a semi-circular hallway where it's three different ones, and it's made to seem like it is going down slightly even though it's not.
