If a creature has an effect that activates upon its death, would that go in the monster's special traits or reactions? (This is just so I can use proper formatting on my stat blocks) For example, if a monster explodes upon dropping to 0 hit points, is that a trait or reaction?

You can't take reactions if you're dead, so I'd imagine it's a trait.
The only reason to make it a reaction is if you want to introduce the possibility that it might not be able to take a reaction upon its death.
