You know the mending cantrip. You can also cast the magic weapon spell with this trait. When you do so, the spell lasts for 1 hour and doesn’t require concentration. Once you cast the spell with this trait, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
Are those basically free spells?
example: Level 2 wizards has 8 spells and 3 cantrips. With the Mark of Making (spellsmith) do I now have now have 4 (3+mending) cantrips and 9 (8+magic weapon )spells?
Does magic weapon use a spell slot or need to be prepared?
Mending becomes a cantrip outside the Wizard cantrips (even though it is on their spell list) so mending plus three Cantrips. (Just like a Forest Gnome Wizard gets Minor Illusion plus 3 cantrips)
Magic Weapon is a Spellsmith spell, it does not take up a spell slot or need to be prepared, it is used once until after a long rest. (Just like Tiefling's Hellish Rebuke ability)
The character know those spells, they don't need to be prepared, don't count against spell limit of class, and don't use spell slots.
But also, it can't use spell slots. The magic weapon spell you get from this feature can only be cast once a day and can't be cast using the slots gained by a class. If you want to cast the spell with a slot, you will have to learn it as a class spell.
So free, yes. But also completely separate.
