So I had the idea for this character, if I ever start a campaign at around level 3-4.
Reginald N. Gerathorne has always been blessed with glimpses of the future and a spark of arcane talent. Sadly it was just a spark, and despite decades of study he was never able to advance beyond mastery of the simplest spells, some of which he could only really manage if he laid everything out with constant reference to his spellbook. He was however, able to deepen his natural connection to the weave of fate through some divination magic.
Variant Human, Lucky, Level 2 Divination Wizard, Basically All Cantrips and Rituals (Except for Magic Missile and Shield)
Despite his failure to achieve in any particular field, Reggie was always well liked by faculty and students alike and kept his position as a somewhat permanent researcher and scribe. He learned a lot in his long tenure, but always sought a way to advance his arcane abilities.
Cloistered Scholar, rounding out his proficiences to Arcana, History, Religion, Nature and Persuasion
One day while studying a ritual designed to commmunicate across the planes, Reginald got his chance to taste more power. An entity or god of some sort from elsewhere offered him a deal. Leave the arcanum and pursue their goals and he could grasp the power that had always eluded him.
Hexblade Warlock, with Agonizing Blast and Armor of Shadows
Now obviously this is not the most optimised build for a Warlock, but between constant Mage Armor and a Shield, he should have some survivability. He should also be pretty useful in the non-combat pillars. Any advice on how to go about optimisation or playstyle for this sort of build? I imagine he would be rather bored any time he has to use his book learning or low level wizard spells but excited any time he gets to eldritch blast or otherwise use his enhanced magical powers.
Actually Hexblade Warlock gives you medium armor proficiency.
This is such a well thought out backstory! I love the whole idea! It looks like if you're going Hexblade, you want to be melee orientated. Slap on Booming Blade cantrip, get on half plate, a shield, any one handed melee weapon that uses a d8 or d10 damage, and you're all set. And if you have a Dex of over 14, you're looking at a 19 AC!
That's a good call on the medium armour. Frees up the invocation for something like Improved Pact Weapon.
It does slightly alter the mental image, Reggie squeezing his slightly overweight scholar's belly into half plate and swinging a blade around as if he knows what he's doing. "I've read a lot about swords, you know."

D&D is a game for nerds... so I guess I'm one :p
Yeah, medium armor is likely to be better than armor of shadows and frees an invocation.
