The chart in the PHB and the stat blocks linked to the ships show 2 different speeds for all but the Galley. Any idea which is the more accurate information? I'm running a game and they have a chance to get a sailing ship. The PHB says 2MPH where the stats say 5mph. The speed affects some in game mechanics. Much appreciated!
The vehicles listed in the Player's Handbook are a type of equipment and are considered the 'base' version
The Vehicles (with a capital V, a game object type like Spell or Monster) found in Ghosts of Saltmarsh are proper Vehicles and are considered expanded rules.
They're both accurate, pick whichever you want to use. If you want simple 'ships as a equipment' use the PHB speeds. If you want more involved 'ships as vehicles', use the GoS speeds.
It's not an error, it's just that there are different rules if you're using ships with stat blocks
