Hey there pretty new DM here just trying to figure out something for one of my players. When it says necrotic or radiant damage does that mean that the caster is able to switch between the damage types anytime they cast the spell or are they dedicated to one of the two paths?
They are allowed to make that decision each time the spell is cast.
Thematically, a player could start using one damage type more frequently as an indicator of the character growing/shifting over time. RAW, the player doesn't need to have any reason--pure choice by whimsy.
You don't know what fear is until you've witnessed a drunk bird divebombing you while carrying a screaming Kobold throwing fire anywhere and everywhere.
