So in our last session the parties barbarian, while raging and was hit with a PWS. The question came up of his Mindless Rage make him immune from the spell? I’m thinking no, but I can’t find any clarification.
Looking at the wording of both says:
Mindless Rage
Beginning at 6th level, you can’t be charmed or frightened while raging. If you are charmed or frightened when you enter your rage, the effect is suspended for the duration of the rage.
Power Word Stun (PWS)
You speak a word of power that can overwhelm the mind of one creature you can see within range, leaving it “dumbfounded”.
In the wording of PWS there is nothing that says “charmed or frightened” it uses the terminology “dumbfounded”. Which to me would put it outside the scope of charmed and frightened. My stance would be in that Mindless Rage does not make you immune to PWS .
I can’t find any other spells which leave a target “dumbfounded”. I’m not sure if this was done on purpose or to make PWS more unique type of spell. Also I can’t imagine that a 6’th level barbarian’s ability would allow you to be immune from an 8’th level spell.
At the end of the day this is a game with mechanics that allow/granting or dont allow/removing certain things... Which is why most DMs dont care if you reskin or reflavor anything. Call your disintegrating ray a bubble beam that tickles your target to literal dust.. Bottom line, Its all the same.
So certain spell, features, items etc may say things to fluff up or make it sound cooler but bottom line look at what it actually does. As Emmber pointed out it 'stuns' the target despite at what the rest of the description says. Regardless of whatever thr description says and regardless of what your character is immune to STUN is the only keyword you're looking for

Specifically the spell Power Word Stun says the target is Stunned if it succeeds. Stunned is neither Charmed nor Frightened so the Barbarian is affected by it.
