On initial reading TCoE’s Brace seemed like a way to get the opportunity attack feature of Pole Arm Master <superiority dice> times a short rest without the feat tax. Then I was looking at the Battle Master Builds and it recommends both PAM and Brace for a spear wielding character. Is there something I’m missing that makes this overlap more than just a wasted feat or maneuver?
I don't think the Builds section is suggesting you should or need to take all those options, just listing some things you might want to pick up. The two features do have a reasonable overlap, so either one will likely give you some of that hoplite feel they are talking about.
There really isn't a point in taking Brace if you have PAM. Brace is really just a Reaction Attack for melee if someone moves into melee range. So all melee classes excepting those with PAM will benefit from it.
