This character was abducted from our party 5 years ago and about a year ago I found out that he was probably going to be coming back, so I built a DND Beyond character sheet for him at that time. Prior to this he was a paper only character.
Fast forward to today: when I go to my character editor I can see that under the Outlander background there's a drop-down list and it shows that Outlander gives me Survival and a drop down choice for which I have Sleight of Hand selected. Here's a pic.
In the PHB it says the Outlander background grants proficiency in Athletics, and Survival. Under Outlander, I don't see anywhere where it talks about being able to pick a proficiency. According to DND Beyond, Outlander is giving me Survival and Sleight of Hand(as can be seen in the pic). I built this character 5 years ago on paper and I'm not sure why I chose Athletics as one of my starting proficiencies if I was already going to be getting it from my background. Nonetheless, on my paper sheet from back then I don't have sleight of hand but DND Beyond is giving it to me and I don't know why. Is this potentially a bug in the Outlander background or is something else going on?
TLDR: DND Beyond is giving me proficiency in Sleight of Hand via Outlander background but according to PHB it shouldn't be. What gives?
Per the PHB if a skill granted by your background is one you already have from your race or class you can choose another skill:
"If a character would gain the same proficiency from two different sources, he or she can choose a different proficiency of the same kind (skill or tool) instead."
You chose Athletics as one of your Ranger proficiencies and when you selected the Outlander background DnDBeyond detects this and then gives you the ability to choose a new skill. If you didn't choose a new skill then DnDBeyond should have just left the selection open and your character would be down a skill. However since you have Sleight of Hand and don't know why I would guess you accidentally clicked on that skill when creating the character.
Well shouldn't it be a STR based skill then and not DEX? I wouldn't think SoH should even be an option.
Edit: I misinterpreted. it just says proficiency of the same kind. If it's an ability skill, then pick a new ability skill. If it's a tool proficiency, pick a new tool proficiency.
