I’ve just started playing DND and my DM ran a brilliant character creation session. We went through and created our character sheets, and later I completed mine on dndbeyond just to better understand it.
We have some differences which I can’t understand. Specifically, the weapon damage. I attack by rolling a d20 for example plus my proficiency and ability modifier (so 20+2+3 for my short sword) and then attack with my short sword. My character sheet says damage is 1d6+5 but the online tool has 1d6+3. Which is right?
The answer depends on which fighting style you selected.
If you chose the dueling fighting style and are not using two weapon fighting then that fighting style will add +2 damage to the attack.
So shortsword is d20 + 3 (stat) + 2 (proficiency) to hit and either d6 + 3(stat) OR d6 + 3(stat) + 2 (dueling fighting style) for damage depending on which style you picked as a first level fighter.
The printed character sheet says "Two weapon fighting style" in the box on the right so the damage listed on the printed sheet is incorrect - it should be d6+3.
P.S. Also, normally when using two weapon fighting the stat bonus is not added to the damage of the off hand attack. The two weapon fighting style allows you to add the damage. So an offhand shortsword attack is just d6 damage unless you have the two weapon fighting style in which case it would be d6+3(stat).
The DM in me must ask, what made it a brilliant character creation session?
A few of us hadn’t played before and it was very well explained - going from almost no knowledge to a reasonable understanding in a session was pretty good. He did it well.

That looks to be an error with your character sheet pdf export; it appears to be adding your proficiency to your damage.

The online version is right. You do not add your proficiency bonus to damage rolls, only to to-hit rolls (assuming you’re proficient with the weapon).
