Last session my Cleric, decided to ready a healing touch, which he then intended to trigger when another hurt player got to him and touched him, allowing him to heal her.
In the moment I allowed it because I wanted to keep the combat flowing and it made sense to me, but, I wonder, in terms of RAW is this allowed. In this case I don't see the issue vs a combat spell so much, the player is willingly moving over, touching the clerics hand and allowing him to cast the spell. But would you allow this as a valid trigger for a held action?
I'm not familiar with healing touch. If you mean cure wounds, then I don't see any problem with the cleric readying the spell on their turn with the trigger of, "When an ally touches me, I cast it on them." Keep in mind, the spell slot is expended as soon as the spell is readied, whether the trigger activates or not. If you meant healing word, then that cannot be readied as it is a bonus action spell and bonus actions can only be taken on your turn. But I think you probably meant the former.
This is definitely allowed, though typically it is worded differently.
In each round you get a reaction, move, action, and bonus action.
You can spend your action to ready a spell. Doing this means you:
Define a trigger that 'activates' the spell as a reaction (which means you cannot use your reaction for other things without giving up the readied action)
Cast the spell no matter what. If no opportunity to cast it occurs, you have wasted the spell slot.
When that trigger occurs, you choose to complete the spell INCLUDING any required touch attack.
So normally people will define a trigger like this "When an injured ally enters my reach I will cast Cure Wounds on them."
Note, they do not have to touch you, you touch them. It is a required part of casting the spell and you can it as part of your reaction.
I don't see a problem readying a touch spell with automatic effect to but one that involve an attack roll or saving throw would not auto-hit or success.
