Me and my group recently found out about the khalastar race and immediately realized the potential of having a bear totem khalastar as an OP meme character idea. However I also realized there's another very powerful trait gotten from having 7th levels in oath of the ancients paladin also allows for your character to take half damage to spells. Bear totem just says the damage type and not how it's dealt, while oath of the ancients specifies how damage was dealt, in this case spell damage.this argument hinges on the idea that if you make a saving throw against something you are resistant to and succeed you would take a quarter of the original damage.how would this be ruled? Would both kinds of resistances stack assuming rules as is?
Khalastar have resistance to Psychic Damage. Bear Totem grants resistance to all damage except psychic. Oath of Ancients get resistance to all damage from spells.
Resistance does not stack.
Does not matter how many ways you have resistance, it only halves the damage. Making a save would also half the damage, bringing it to 1/4.

This is all true, but having a character that is resistant to everything is pretty cool.

I do agree, but that is more about Bear Totem. There are a lot of ways to get resistance, rings for example, and any Bear Totem should definitely look for something to grant Psychic Resistance.
"Resistance" + "Resistance" = "Resistance" (1/2 damage), in the same way that stacking advantage with advantage is still just advantage. However, "Resistance" + "take half damage/halve the damage/etc." does stack, when you can find features that allow something like that without calling it resistance. For instance, a raging barbarian with resistance from blunt damage who is also a rogue could use Uncanny Dodge to take 1/4 damage from the attack.

I'm going to make this way harder than it needs to be.
