Is it possible for a player to (RAW) capture a soul (like of a rabbit or bandit) and bind that soul into a item to give that item power? (Like the enchanting system from Skyrim?)
I ask cause l heard someone mention a cool (but evil) way to make a indestructible spell tome, but it requires "soul trapping" so l decided to ask if there is a way for a lv 10+ PC to capture souls RAW?
Soul Cage, which DOES create something you can use to get magical effects, but only as part of the Soul Cage spell and only useable by caster of Soul Cage.
There's not a currently published system for collecting souls as resources, probably because there's not really a currently published system for expending souls as resources.
Some current RAW stuff that isn't really soul trapping, but is thematically similar, includes:
Collect the skulls of intelligent enemies, to later cast Speak with Dead on them at your leisure
Hexblade Warlocks have an ability which involves binding the soul of a slain enemy for a day, and even their level 1 ability seems like it involves absorbing a soul as you slay your curse target
College of Whispers Bards have an ability which allows them to steal faces/memories for a day when they kill someone.
Soul Coin is an example of a published magic item that stores souls. Your DM could probably come up with a process by which you could create something similar, or just let you find them as treasure.
When you die while wearing an 'empty' one, your soul goes into the ring.
Ring of mind shielding was mentioned in the post I got the idea from. In fact the exact quote from the post is "Trap and bind a soul into a ring of mind shielding". I had no idea how to do this, hence the thread, but now I think l have a idea. (Ps the full idea was to trap a soul into the ring, somehow strip them of their memorys and personality, and force them to memorize your spells to have a "indestructible spell book". Still have no idea how to erase the souls mind and bend it to my will,or force feed it my spells, but the link you gave is a big help, thanks.)
Well published rules aren’t real relevant to much of what you’re talking about, because there’s no reason to think that you can use a conversation with somebody (even a psychic conversation) as a stand-in for having a spell book in the spell preparation process. But with that out of the way, the ring of mind shielding is a pretty cool way to introduce an NPC advisor for a character? Not a bad way for a DM to saddle a group with an NPC to deliver exposition and plot information, without having to burden the group with another body in combat and social encounters that can potentially steal the spotlight. A ring of mind shielding, depending on who’s soul it’s housing, is sort of the DND equivalent of having Alexa or Siri in your pocket!
as for your question about how a player could potentially trap a soul into a ring of mind shielding... I don’t imagine that there’s a real way to actually defeat the souls ability to choose whether to stay in the ring or pass on to the afterlife, since thats how the ring describes itself as working. But considering that the ring sucks up the soul of whoever is wearing it, not whoever has atuned to it, you can at least force someone INTO the ring. I imagine you could subdue a very evil person who doesn’t have much to look forward to in their afterlife, put the ring on their finger, kill them, and then offer them the opportunity to either remain in your ring and be helpful or you’ll destroy the ring? Kind of an expensive (and evil?) gambit, but with the right victim with the right motivation whose knowledge or perspective is useful enough... I suppose it’s a possibility?

My dm is letting me (Necromancer Wizard) when I use my grim harvest to instead trap the soul for later use for makeing items and depending on the power of the soul will determine the items I can create. (Obviously he and him talked it out so I wouldn't over use it)

Two spells trap spells.
Magic Jar, which does not create an item of power
and
Soul Cage, which DOES create something you can use to get magical effects, but only as part of the Soul Cage spell and only useable by caster of Soul Cage.

I'm going to make this way harder than it needs to be.
There is one more thing, the magic item: Ring of Mind Shielding.

Well,homebrew it is.
Well, there's soul coins in Descent into Avernus.
