So I was looking through the expanded Sidekick stats in the follow-up adventures to DoIP as I was working on a nature based spellcaster. (I had the idea of making Reidoth a sidekick.) My question though is about the jump to level 7.
The stat blocks in Storm Lord's Wrath give spellcasters a staggering five new spells and technically as many spell slots of up to two more spell levels. What should I add to the zero gain at level six to minimize this huge jump in spellcasting power?
I never noticed that, but that is definitely inconsistent. Spellcaster sidekicks are half casters for the first 6 levels, then suddenly they are full casters at level 7 (causing them to gain 4 spellcasting levels at once).
To fix it, you would have to remake the first 6 levels of spellcaster, making the following changes to spellcasting at each level:
2 level 1 slots; Healer: guidance, sacred flame, cure wounds, bless; mage: fire bolt, light, sleep, burning hands. (Most of these are not changes).
Gain 1 level 1 slot; Healer: shield of faith; mage: shield.
Gain 1 level 1 slot and 2 level 2 slots; Healer: aid; mage: invisibility.
Gain 2 level 3 slots; healer: revivify; mage: fly.
Gain 1 level 3 slot; Healer: protection from energy; mage: fireball.
That way their progression roughly matched PCs, and when they get to level 7, they get their 4th level slot and spell, and 4th cantrip. Non-spellcasting features progress at the normal rate.
