With Finesse, you can change strength to dexterity for the ability modifier of any attacks with a finesse weapon. You make the choice of the ability modifier before rolling the attack roll but is often assumed to just be which is higher, strength or dexterity.
I have not been using Finesse when I miss, just wanted to check this is correct
You sure you didn't mean the Light property??? Because your question doesn't really make any sense being about the Finesse property.
If you are talking about the Light property then you qualify for getting the additional attack when you make an attack, hitting or missing with the attack doesn't matter.
When you take the Attack action on your turn and attack with a Light weapon, you can make one extra attack as a Bonus Action later on the same turn.

You mean with extra attacks? As far as I know, there's no issue applying this property to every attack, whether it hits or misses.

No stipulations for needing to “hit” for the bonus attack to trigger. You just have to make an attack with a finesse weapon.

The character sheet I was working off had some formatting issues when it printed and I'm pretty sure it came out wrong, I do mean light.
Thanks for correcting me🙃
