Is it possible to choose another ancestry than the 10 provided for a dragonborn? For example, a platinum dragonborn? Or maybe a sapphire one? A yellow scaled-dragonborn?
Personally, I think yes if the DM allows, since the only changes would be the elemental type and breath weapon style. (As well as roleplaying and scale color)
There is only one platinum dragon, bahamut, so you’d definitely need DM approval to be the descendant of a god. Personally, I’d allow the other kinds, but just as a flavor thing. Say you’re descended from a sapphire, and look how you like. Just choose the breath weapon/resistance from the normal list.
Technically, there are at least 3 platinum dragons, however Bahamut is the only one with wings.
Descendency doesn't have to be biological. It could be that a dragonborn born during an auspicious time of year or within a temple of Bahamit might be influenced by circumstance.
But yeah, at a home game, write up a good backstory and a DM can make some tweaks if they approve. Officially, you're stuck with what's published.

Technically yes, but officially no (not at the moment at least).
