One of my players has gotten really into the politics of my world and keeps asking questions like what noble family is aligned with who, what kingdoms are at war etc. so I’ve just been making them roll intelligence to see if they know but this doesn’t seem right to me I feel like there would be a skill to this but I don’t know which one to use if any.
So my question is is there a skill that goes along with politics and if not should I make one?
Taking a look at the "Using Ability Scores" section of the rules, some of the things you mention the player wanting to do are already mentioned as being covered by particular skills.
Intelligence (History) is stated to cover historical events, past disputes, and recent wars. That easily includes political alliances and declared wars, because current events are really just extremely recent history.
As for participation in political matters, such as working to make changes in governmental policy, that all easily falls under Charisma, with deception, intimidation, or persuasion applying depending upon the chosen method of influence.

Wisdom (Insight) rolls will also become very important if your player plans to begin playing in the realms of intrigue.
