As the title asks, what happens to a disguise in battle? To be more specific, when you get thrashed and almost die from a dozen mimics, does your disguise get destroyed in the process? The description for Disguise Kit says this -
This pouch of cosmetics, hair dye, and small props lets you create disguises that change your physical appearance.
I figure since the changes are completely physical and cosmetic, a rough battle would destroy your disguise.
To give an example, I was playing a Dragonborn Wizard in a campaign where Dragonborns don't exist on our current plane, so I created a disguise of a human with a Disguise Kit that I wear 24/7. The party was dealing with an infestation of mimics in town at the time. The party went one way to attempt to find the source of the mimics, but I felt bad for a poor tavern owner who's tavern was getting decimated by four mimics. I felt that I could confidently take on four mimics, so I decided to stay behind and kill them. After the party walked away, I discovered that there were a lot more mimics hiding in the corners and I found myself facing a dozen mimics all on my own. As a wizard. With a +0 constitution score. Needless to say, I almost died. Fortunately, the party made it back before I got killed, but it brought up the question of whether they would be able to tell I was Dragonborn. (The majority of my party didn't know I was Dragonborn at the time)
If there are any RAW references, that would be great, but I'll accept RAI as well. Thoughts?
Since damage is abstract, it’s difficult to say. Could be you got whacked so hard your fake nose came off, could be not. It’s really going to be up to your DM how they want to go with it. I mean letting a dragonborn look like a human after a little makeup seems like it’s already stretching the limits of what makeup can do, so maybe they just let it slide.
