Starting Equipment/Gold Question

I have a question about starting Gold and Equipment. If you take the option of rolling your gold instead of the starting Class Equipment does that mean you lose the starting equipment from the background or is that separate?

If you use the optional rule from chapter 5 to spend coin on gear, you do not receive the starting equipment from your background. (per PHB)

Okay.  I was just unsure because backgrounds give items with no real value such as poorly wrought maps from your homeland.  Thank you.

Personally, the items found in a Background equipment but not in the Adventure Gear table i generally give them for free.
