I’m pretty new to campaigning - I’m currently in my first with a Draconic Sorcerer - and am planning a new character for the next campaign we’re planning. I have some people who can help me, but I want some other opinions first before I go to them with ideas.
I love the idea of a Wild Magic sorcerer who was blessed by a fey, but I’m not sure of anything outside of that. I kinda want something with much better health and an AC that’s at least a little higher than my current. One of my fellow players is making a really good character that’s making our DM already consider challenges, so I want to try to measure up and be helpful in battles.
We’re starting at level five, if that helps at all. Any suggestions are welcomed. Thanks so much!
My initial thought would be to take a couple levels of paladin, which would give you simple and martial weapon proficiences as well as proficiency with shields and all types of armor. You'd gain a couple d10's for hit dice as well as some of the other class abilities; such as divine smites and a fighting style. I would probably take the other three levels as your Wild Magic sorcerer, so you can get those precious metamagic feats. You can always take additional levels of paladin later if you want/need additional hit points or other paladin features (like having an extra attack or the aura of protection). The Oath of the Ancients might be a good thematic fit with your fey-blessed character. Otherwise, you can just keep going sorcerer with only the two levels of paladin, which gave you the weapons and armor options and some smiting ability when you need more than just spells.
Or, if you don't want to go paladin, you could go the warlock route. The Archfey would be the closest match with your concept, but your DM might allow hexblade with some light reflavoring to make the pact more feywild versus shadowfell. The two levels of hexblade would also give you simple and martial weapon proficiences as well as proficiency with shields and light and medium armors. You can use your CHA modifier for your weapon attacks, which is potentially a step-up from the paladin multiclass (which would need a decent STR or DEX modifier to be beneficial). Extra spells and a couple invocations could be helpful as well.
Plenty of other options, which I'm sure that others will share as well. These would be my intial thoughts and suggestions for a multiclass to help boost your Wild Magic sorcerer, though.
You might consider ranger2/sorceror 3 you gain the base ranger spells (probably hunters mark and either cure wounds or good berry) which give extra damage and some healing as well as languages and some skills if you go ranger first then “discover” your sorcerous abilities. I’m not a fan of wild sorceror personally - I don’t really like rolling on the wild effects table - my other go to (after draconic) is storm. You really don’t want a major dip into anything else because you need all the SPs you can get.
