The older sorcerors are pants, I know, but I still want to craft one. What heath-robinson hombrew steps do I need to perform to bring the Tasha era Sorc up to 2024 standard?
Because y'know backwards compatability and all that.
If you are talking about using the old subclasses with 2024 rules, it is pretty simple. All that really changes is that you have to wait until level 3 to get your subclass. Everything thing else stays the same as using a 2024 subclass. The subclass features stay the same, you just wait until level 3 to get the subclass benefits you got at level 1 in 2014.
So for example, a 2024 Lunar Sorcerer would not get Lunar Embodiment until level 3 (used to be level 1 in 2024).
This is easily done in the character creator by going to the first tab (labeled Home), and making sure Extended Rules is checked. Now, when you make your character, you should be able to use all of the subclasses from 2014 that have not yet gotten the update treatment with the 2024 rules (more spells, Sorcery Incarnate, etc.)
The question was how to homebrew some additional spells into the subclass to bring it up to par.
I've done something similar to fix the bug with old paladin subclasses. (I had to do it to a species, rather than the subclass, due to not owning the subclass myself, so it's possible it's slightly different.)
Anyway:
add a feature to the subclass
To that feature, add a separate spell for each spell you want auto-prepared
On each spell
Ability score should be set to charisma
consumes spell slot: yes
counts as known spell: no
always prepared: yes
available at character level: 3, 5, 7, 9, as appropriate
Leave everything else as default.
This appears to work, but I'm not a homebrew expert, so there may be some details I've got wrong.
