We have just finished our campaign (albeit after only getting to level 3) and are doing a level 20 battle Royale to cap it off. I need help building the best sorcerer for this that I can.
I'm stuck with options I've already chosen, so I'm a Yuan ti sorcerer who is a favored soul.
Rules are as follows:
-Everyone is at level 20 -Multiclassing is allowed -In terms of items, everyone is allowed to have: -One Legendary, one very rare and one rare item. -I will let you choose which ones you want, HOWEVER, there are some that I would deem OP (i.e. The Deck of Many things) and wont allow you to use.
In general, items that could insta-kill or would somewhat remove someone from this plane of existence are off the table.
There are two rounds of prep. Spells like plane shift and power word kill are also off the table.
Two rounds of prep? Hmm... fun times. Maybe an unconventional tactic, but I have an idea, and I'm interested to see how it works. Take Wish, Telekinesis, Counterspell, Blink, and of course a bunch of other spells. But anyway, Round 1, use the spell duplication feature of Wish to cast Glibness, the level 8 Bard spell. It lets you substitute a 15 on any charisma check. Round two, cast Telekinesis. It calls for an ability check with your spellcasting ability modifier. Because it's Charisma, your Telekinesis checks are always at minimum 15+Cha, hopefully 20. Use Telekinesis to force ranged characters and spellcasters to make a Strength check or lose their weapon/focus. If they're, say, a standard ranger with a -1 in Strength, they literally cannot win - you always rip away their weapon. Then all you have to do is stuff it into a Bag of Holding and they're toothless.
You know what else calls for an ability check with your spellcasting ability modifier? Counterspell. Thanks to Glibness, your counterpells will auto-succeed in countering even a level 9 spell when you counter from 3rd level.
Pair as many spells as you can with subtle spell so that your spells cannot be countered; this works especially well with Counterspell, as it prevents your counter from being countered. Use Distant Spell metamagic if they're out of range of your Counterspell. Beef up your offense with Empowered Spell. Quicken Spells so that you can keep using your action on Telekinesis.
Subtle spell means you shut down enemy casters. Telekinesis pulling away weapons and focuses means you shut down ranged characters. Against melee characters, just fly away.
I'm not sure what items would be most optimal, but it's hard to go wrong with a Staff of the Magi or Archmage's Robes.
If ist doesnt have to be a Sorcerer, perhaps a 17 Blade Singer, 3 Paladin. With a Ring of Wishes, He could Wish a Simulcarum, Cast Antimagic Zone. And use slots for Smite and Blade Song damage reduction. The Simulcarum meanwhile could step out of the Zone and start casting, stepping back in afterwards...
