So, I was taught DND from a 2e veteran and our first games were in that.
Recently I have been looking into things because of what's been going on, and apparently there was a very significant change I was not aware of concerning that particular racial option.
Now, I've looked everywhere trying to find anywhere this has been written down to confirm it really was that way in the 2e book, but have only found things for Pathfinder. I have also read the 5e version of them and 'infernal' is still the language so that much wasn't changed, and I've seen there's still art of this race so I don't think they were discontinued.
So... can we talk about this? Am I even allowed to mention the 'internship' in Hell? In addition to that, if something is retconed like this can it still be played or written about? I'm very confused and feel like I'm the only person who ever came across this. It feels like maybe they nixed it during the Satanic Panic?
I'm unfamiliar with the D&D5 version of ghost elves, but I think part of your problem may be that ghost elves weren't introduced in AD&D2, but rather in D&D3, as an article in Dragon magazine issue 313 (2003).
The short answer, though, is that you are free to use any old lore for your characters that your table approves.

The time of the ORC has come. No OGL without irrevocability; no OGL with 'authorized version' language. #openDND
Practice, practice, practice • Respect the rules; don't memorize them • Be merciless, not cruel • Don't let the dice run the game for you
Also the link doesn't say anything about elves in that issue though, and the thing the DM had me read was an actual physical book not a magazine. So for that half of the question I'm still confused. :(

K edited my profile picture to the photo of my first character.

They are listed in the d&D wiki here: https://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Elves,_Ghost_(3.5e_Race)
but they may be at least partially homebrew.

It says the page doesn't exist. So, either, there was a conspiracy in the last ten hours or something else is going on.
Correction, it was just a broken link :)
Yup this sounds like what I read! :D Thanks for helping me find it! <3
