I just read the third adventure in Candlekeep Mysteries (Book of the Raven) and it clearly says the Domains of Dread are located in the Shadowfell. But this basically contradicts what most people said the last time I asked this question: that Ravenloft is really its own separate demiplane in 5e.
I'm not an expert on Ravenloft, but I'm pretty sure it's both. The Domains of Dread are demiplanes located in the Shadowfell. Imagine the Shadowfell as a (creepy) floating island. The Domains of Dread are like smaller islands around the Shadowfell, attached to it by rope bridges. However, the bridges are creaky, and most people can't get between the islands easily without a using a glider or making their own bridge (plane shift or a planar portal). So they're demiplanes that are attached to the Shadowfell but are still individual islands.

At least in 5e(I don't have any Ravenloft stuff in previous editions, except for a few 2e Ravenloft monsters), that's been the explanation.
Yeah, AD&D 2E stated that the Ravenloft setting was it's own unique demiplane floating within the [Deep] Ethereal Plane. The Demiplane of Dread existed as such through the 3E versions and updates. It appears that 5E, which changed the Demiplane of Shadow into the Shadowfell, is also incorporating the Demiplane of Dread into that mix as well.
Until we see what Van Richten's Guide says when it comes out in May, I think Thauraeln's response is probably pretty close to how it's being handled as a bit of both... A specific demiplane that is strongly linked/connected to the Shadowfell.
Thanks guys. I read Domains of Dread on DTRPG and loved it, but that’s the extent of my knowledge about Ravenloft. Really looking forward to Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft when it comes out in May.

@Thauraeln_The_Bold what do you think?

Thank you 😊. That makes sense.
