When I think of the archetypical half orc I think of them as a the ultimate bro. That is they are the teams muscle that pulls them out of trouble. When I read a new book series I pick a character to use as inspiration for a D&D character. This times inspiration comes from the "Sharpe novels" by Bernard Cornwell. An excellent historical fiction novels that I highly recommend. The Character I am being inspired by is the sharpshooting axe wielding but kicking Irish Sargent Patrick Harper.
Karobar home was conquered by the sea fairing human empire. It has been centuries since the time of heroes who fought the humans with fire in their hearts. Karobar's mother told him all the old stories. stories of the mighty orcs who fought for hearth and kin, of great beasts slain and made him swore that he would fight the humans to the day they died.
He left his beloved island nation because there was not enough food to go around. He traveled to the city looking for work, got drunk and woke up being "recruited" into his homes oppressor's army as a buck private. Racism made him want to dissert at the soonest convenience. His pride drove him to succeed through training. Then he earn the coveted green jacket of the Rangers. Then they sent him to war.
It was a complete disaster. Their army routed and fleeing through frozen mountains. The Ranger captain dead leaving them in the hands of the units imbittered lieutenant (Sharpe, the main character in the books). The lieutenant envied Karobar's easy friendship with the men. If they don't make peace and worked together them and what is left will all die
