I am creating a Duergar character for a new campaign. My thoughts are to use the Far Traveler Background ( Exile ). The new description of the Duergar describes them as slave traders. I was thinking that perhaps he got caught helping young slave escape and was exiled and the slave executed. He made his way to the surface carrying with him the diary of the young slave written in a language he cannot read. Thoughts anyone?
Love it. Short, to the point, tells me something about the character without it feeling like he's already lived his life. Sympathetic duergar is not something you see a lot of.

The time of the ORC has come. No OGL without irrevocability; no OGL with 'authorized version' language. #openDND
Practice, practice, practice • Respect the rules; don't memorize them • Be merciless, not cruel • Don't let the dice run the game for you
Thanks, though I am just starting to flesh it out. I just wanted to know if it seemed feasible or if maybe I should write it as if the slave got caught on their own and the Character was not caught but felt guilty because of the slaves death and exiled himself. The reason for this thinking is that perhaps instead of exiling him for helping a slave they would just execute him as well.

Don't overthink it. Just flesh it out during play.

Okay. I think I came up with the final version. It makes sense and fits with the Ideal and Bond from my background. Far Traveler Background ( Exile ). He got caught helping a young slave girl escape. His punishment was to be enslaved himself and the girl was executed to serve as a warning to others. Eventually he was able to make his own escape and made his way to the surface world, still carrying the girls diary with him and still unable to read the strange language it was written in.
