I don't know if this is the right place to ask but I recently got Explorers Guide to Wildemout and am thinking of running a campaign there. For those who have how is the setting and do you need to have a good knowledge of Critical Role to get the most out of the book.
I was familiar with the Guide to Wildemount book before ever watching any of the episodes of Critical Role, and it certainly didn't hinder the game play of those Wildemount campaigns very much. Then again, most of my players weren't very familiar with the Critical Role episodes at that time either, so there wasn't much expectation to include details of those characters (and their antics) into anything that I was trying to run. If you have any players who are familiar with the series, then you might need to deal with their knowledge from the show interacting with what you are creating for your table.
So, personally, I would say that the setting is fairly decent and doesn't really require any specific knowledge of Critical Role. Might help you flesh things out more fully, but it's not anymore necessarily than running a Forgotten Realms campaign without having read all of their various paperback novels.
