So after a TPK we are restarting our antihero campaign. Im considering playing the wizard this time, i think im gonna go with Div or Enchantment depending if i go with human, half-elf or dhampir. But what I'm considering is using the Dark Gifts idea and using the symbiotic being option for a possessing spirit type thing like Lasciel from Dresden Files or Xana from Dark Messiah. The clutch point of the back story is that spirit would be his source of learning magic. He's not having it bestowed on him like a sorcerer or making any kinds of deals like a warlock but he ends up getting the spirit by accident ala dresden files, and the spirit to help him survive and help achieve its ends teaches my character the basics of spellcasting. I also thought as an RP element that the spirit helps him write and memorize spells and if he pisses the spirit off maybe his spellbook likes like gibberish or having to communicate with the spirit is how he prepares spells and doesnt have a traditional spellbook? Thoughts?
If you're starting over with an eye on RP, start simple. Can you define your character like this? (on-site link) It's a great way to set a foundation. Don't set a foundation with an eye on what you intend to add to the backstory. If you can't fit it down into that method, it's very likely that the backstory is too deep for a starting adventurer.
(Summary. Create only 3 sentences that state your home life, one significant event, and why you're adventuring.)
If you're starting at higher levels, consider involving the DM during the creation process.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
We will be starting at level 3 or 5, we will vote on it this weekend. Also the DM is aware of the general idea and she's fine with it but she wont encourage me or any player, to take a backstory or concept over another one.
