Is there a book or online resource for places in the d&d world? I am lore/background/story crafting and have questions about cities and locations of notable interest.
Do you mean the world of Faerun or Forgotten Realms/Sword Coast? This is where the bulk of adventures are set, but there are others, and many also create their own worlds.
But if you do mean Faerun, In terms of 5e published material there is the Sword Coast Adventurers guide (which in my opinion is one of the worst published books for 5e)
There are also lots of lore books from previous editions as well as novels set in the world. You can find older version material on DMSGuild along with many additions written by a variety of people.
Old Dungeon and Dragon magazines can also be a source of inspiration, and most of these are now archived online.
There is tons of material available online across many wikis and forums - and it really depends how far down this rabbithole you want to go :)
Fandoms' Forgotten Realms wiki is a large collective resource, which provide links to reference materials and source books from current and previous editions.
Just what are you looking for? Ideas on where to put men’s? , ores? Cities and towns? What, there is really no one place with guides to how to put a fantasy world together it’s just something you do. Now that doesn’t mean that those things are in specific places for specific reasons in the real world but you are creating a fantasy world not evolving a real world. Specifics we can maybe help with, generalities are harder.
edit: for the Forgotten Realms the best online source is the forgotten realms wiki which pretty much has everything published somewhere in it. For Mystra’s and great hawk you will have to to the 1e/2e guides as not much else has been added since tho they may have wikis as well.
