Hello, I'm starting up a new campaign with some kids at my school, and the DM said we could play whatever we wanted, as long as it wasn't too overpowered. I decided to go with an Aarakocra Monk, going for the Way of the Astral Self. I'm really struggling to come up with a backstory. My character is going to be the Folk Hero background, and True Neutral alignment. I asked my brother what he thought about my backstory, but he said it was really cliché. Could anyone help me think of a backstory? Please and thank you.
A backstory should really be up to the player and the DM. Your brother can have his opinion if he wants, but as long as you have a backstory that gives your character motivation, then you really don't need much else. Your DM would probably have some ideas based on the setting and campaign, so ask them.
There’s nothing wrong with a cliche! Most of your character’s story will come from in game roleplay, and the reason that ‘cliches’ are cliches is because they work, and will help you make a good character. It’s your character, not your brother’s.

I have no personality.

Only spilt the party if you see something shiny.
