With the felling of a great dragon and obtaining of the next of the legendary shields of the house La Fafard, the odd group of adventurers, The Party of the Four Shields, were in need of a place to call a base. Captain Jackass had mentioned that he new of some dwarves looking for work, and the amount of coin the dragon had lying around in its hoard was more then plenty to get it started. The construction would begin as soon as everyone could agree on our defenses and town layout. The hidden bay that was once used by the Deurgar would be perfect. Though the entrance to the mountain would haunt Ranger Roris. The only female that had ever kissed him had run away in that very spot. Maybe, one day, he would find her.
With construction of the yet-to-be-named town underway, there was nothing else to do in the hidden bay. The party received word of the whereabouts of the third shield and decided there was no time like the present! There is too much adventure to be had and pirates to plunder to stay tucked away, looking at merfolk, so the party set off to the lone mountain in Arkon. Do Not Disturb The Dragon That Sleeps. Do Not Disturb The Dragon That Sleeps. The words rang in our ears as we sailed into the sunset. A very clear warning that we were sure to test. Days went by as we slowly sailed along the coast of Krynn, constantly keeping a close eye for pirates. The first day, nothing, the second day nothing, but on the third day!!! Nothing. We were getting antsy; we had spent so many days learning new skills and spells that we just wanted to try out on some unlucky duergar pirates! On the morning of the fourth day we finally had hope. Abaddos celestial owl came back in a flurry of feathers after scouting the area. That could only mean one thing.
The pirates had come across a silk merchants ship and decided to take some merch as well as more slaves, but it was their unlucky day. Before they knew what had hit them, the Kings flag was high on our mast, half of them were burned to a crisp and the other half were simply unlucky enough to last slightly longer. The duergar tried their best in a battle of wizards. Throughout the battle, the screams of Bark the Barbarian could be heard yelling, “Hey, that was my kill!”, as Prince Dill showed the party the meaning of power. The duergar captain begged and begged for mercy! But with the strong intimidation tactics of Epstein, he couldn’t even remember his favourite colour, so King Coomer pissed on him before he was given over to his former slaves, so that they could do justice as they saw fit. Abaddo and Coomer freed the tied-up merchants We couldn’t believe our luck though. A draconian merchant ship, and a now empty ship full of slaves that can run a ship? We struck a deal. After all, with the greatest access to mithril these merchants had ever seen, they wanted in at the ground floor, and our trade route grew. Though not everyone was keen on initially attacking the pirates, we all came out of it with high hopes of our future. After all, when we sail with Captain Jackass, we’re not just merchants, were pirate hunters for the King.
After a well fought battle, and a well plundered ship, our heroes carried on with their journey to find the third shield at the long Arkon mountain. A few more days at sea till they would reach the mouth of the river that would bring them inland. Around the sixth day, another duergar pirate ship was spotted, chasing a merchant ship. With money on the mind, we gave chase. Putting some of the crew onto our crew powered screw, we zipped along the water, raising the flag of Krynn, as we are law-abiding privateers. In a turn of events, the “merchant” ship raised theirs too, though a flag of Arkon. Realizing that they were f ‘ed, the duergar pirates turned sail and tried to escape. Though they had no way of outrunning our ship and were soon attached by the very harpoons they used to snare their victims. A quick fireball and a shot of chain lightning, again stealing the kills, taking out most of the crew, while the rest were quickly set upon by the ferocious Party of the Four Shields. Though there were no slaves on this ship, the plunder was well worth it. Even got a high five from the Arkon privateers, as they were impressed with our rig. We towed our new ship into the nearest town and hired a crew to start yet another merchant ship with our flag.
After the brief distraction of gold and pirates, we continued down the river, eventually making it to the mountain. Sheer cliffs of insanity ascended before us! Roris had the bright idea to put three lengths of rope together with a grappling hook, Prince Dil just started climbing, Abaddo casted a spell on himself to change his appearance to hopefully help with climbing (it didn’t). King Coomer pulled the, “Ya‘ll are idiots” card and bothered to actually look at the cliff. Spotting a carving of a black dragon, he knew what do to. Putting his shield against the carving, it resonated with the carving and a slope came out of the cliffside for easy climbing for about 30 percent of the way up. Meanwhile, Epstein and Roris were making progress on the rope. At the end of the slope, another carving was spotted, this one of a blue dragon. Epstein refused to hand over the shield while he was on the rope, so Abaddo took the opportunity to use mage hand to simply take it from him. The shield being somewhat sentient, allowed this to occur, and the shield pressed against the carving, allowing another slope to come out of the cliff side. At this point Epstien fell onto the ship, while Roris bravely climbed onward. Epstien joined the crew on the magically available slopes and offered his shield with the shield of the black dragon for the last carving of both dragons, opening up the last slope that would bring them to the top. Roris still climbed like the beast he is, and made it to the top shortly after.
A door awaited us as we traversed a path leading up the side of the mountain. Above the door, written in draconian, read, “Speak the name of the evil that needs to be crushed”. Much deliberation was needed before coming up with the name Bytholemew, and we entered. A series of spiral staircases and various riddled doors let us up through the mountain. Some riddles having the party cry out for hints from various deities. We eventually made it to a room with four dragon statues. The statues of the blue and black dragon having been toppled, assuming by their defeat at the hands of this unlikely crew. Two large doors, basically waiting to be opened, stood in silence as the party pondered. Ront, in his impatience, burst through them, despite the words of warning that Abaddo gave about not disturbing the sleeping dragon. The next room was cut off by a large heavy curtain that Ront and Epstein were only too eager to look at while Coomer and Abaddo crept up the stairs, feeling that something was amiss. As the curtains flung open, Epstein and Ront knew they were f ‘ed as poisonous gas filled the area. A smokey green dragon towered above the party, eager to taste the meagre flesh of a few humanoids. Epstein ran like a coward down the stairs, wailing at the sight of the dragon. Ront passed out from the gas, and the rest prepared for battle. This dragon was between them and the next shield, and they weren’t going to give up so easily. Blows back and forth were struck and defended against as the party tried to slay this beast. Epstein got his wits back, and some well timed healing spells allowed Ront to go unconscious multiple times while also doing a fair bit of damage. The clerics healing kept everyone together to eventually kill the beast. Upon its defeat, everyone went unconscious anyway, only to wake up to the dragon being gone, and no sign of the battle having ever occurred in the first place.
