I'm playing a reborn who's not the sharpest nail in the box. We were in a boss fight. One of my teammates casts darkness (he has devil's sight) and goes to the corner to "hide," and snipe the enemy from the darkness. In the room there was a BBEG creature guarding an open gate. In the middle of the open gate, there was a pillar of ice. In the ice was a book. My character tossed a rope with a grapple, pulling it. Icicles formed along the rope, damaging him. Despite this, he pulled and cracked the pillar. His teammates magic missile-d the pillar. Enemies started surrounding him and missed. The BBEG cast a spell from the encased book that knocked a huge chunk out of everyone's health. Still he hung on. Getting closer, he attacked the ice pillar, breaking it free, and fleeing with a block of ice, book still encased, he returned to his teammates who were hiding in the dark, despite the fact that he couldn't see in the dark. The BBEG wasn't defeated and from the last of its magic attacked twice more, bringing one of my teammates to death's door. In the dark, completely blind, he performed a medicine check rolling a nat 20.
Dumb idea, but it turned out to be the one that helped save the party!
