Currently in my campaign I have Asmodeus the BBEG. Now to clear up confusion, I have fully homebrewed Faerun to my liking, meaning I homebrewed the history, the gods, the people, the geography locations, and the planes. (Another thing there is no Nine Hells). So in my homebrewed version of the Faerun, Asmodeus (He is the ruler of the Shadowfell) was once a (I am deciding on the race, either a human, tiefling, or gith.) And through evil ways he acended to godhood. What could those ways be?
EDIT: I am trying to work on the plot hole of not having the hells, any suggestion for that? I am thinking of merging the hells and the Shadowfell.
In regards to Asmodeus's ascension, maybe he stole or discovered some kind of powerful artifact, like the book of vile darkness. Or perhaps he came into the possession of an otherworldly wish spell. Or maybe he was just a really powerful mage (or something) that discovered an ancient arcane secret to becoming divine?
In regards to your plot hole, scatter the rulers of the layers of the Nine Hells across the lower planes, like putting Zariel in Carceri or Tiamat in Hades.

Is Asmodeus able to change shape? A grung would be a good disguise. I mean, I think Asmodeus seems like the sort who'd "play with its food" so to speak.
Asmodeus' backstory keeps changing with editions. I prefer to leave things like that to guesswork and lies. Some of the best unfathomable baddies (or complicated heroes) are ruined by explaining their origins regardless how epic. Don't explain what's not necessary. If people pry, resort to unverifiable and contradicting rumors - perfect for a deity who lies unless a deal is struck, and even then, the deal has to be ironclad about its history, a fool's bargain to be certain.

If Asmodeus is ruler of the Shadowfell, perhaps he could have been a Shadar-Kai, and as for how he ascended to godhood, I really have nothing more than what others have said. Perhaps an existing evil god wanted him to become a deity, and gave Asmodeus a small part of his power, which ascended Asmodeus to godhood?
An off-topic question I do have is why you are calling your world a homebrewed Faerun. If you homebrewed the planes, lore, gods, geography, people, and everything else, it's not Faerun, it's a homebrew world. Why would you mention Faerun at all if it's just homebrew?
I say its Faerun because I have kept all the cities, use the original map. The only geography change I made was a small crack in the earth. So I am still keeping the classic Faerun characters in there as well as the base of it. I have just "flavored" it to my liking
Prehaps he was a le/ce adventurer that defeated the last god of the shadowfell and in doing so absorbed hi godlly essesnce

I don't know, but I think he should be a grung.

He should have been a gnome! Ok, out of the poll, I feel like a human would work the best.
