tell me any interesting ways to traumatise your characters!! >:)
Really, in this day and age, any straightforward example is arguably "cliché". At its core, any traumatic backstory boils down to massive loss and/or harm. Loss of close family members crops up so often because it's an extremely visceral and relatable example of such a trauma. I suppose a slightly more offbeat one is something in the vein of "inadvertently setting loose a great evil", but that's a fairly common plot point as well.
Crises of faith... (Crises plural, not a misspelling.)
Once believed in one's country and sworn to the ruler but became disillusioned by a new ruler changing things for the worse...
Saw how exclusionary one's Lawful Good faith really was though raised to serve faithfully...
Thought the family led a righteous life by giving wealth to those in need, but at the time of becoming an adult, was inducted into a horrific family cult that guarantees the family fortune through ritual sacrifice of those "helped" by the fiendish wealth...
A death in the belief of a philosophy or of an ideal or of the world the person knew...

This is what ChatGPT is good for. You can ask it to generate a background and tweak that for your setting and the character ideas you have.
Input: Please generate a very brief background for a Dungeons & Dragons character that's not a cliche and is suitable for any D&D campaign.
Output:
Born into a family of humble farmers, this character spent their early years tending the fields and embracing the simple joys of rural life. However, a fateful encounter with a traveling bard awakened a hidden talent for storytelling and performance. Driven by a burning passion for adventure and a thirst for knowledge, they left their family behind to explore the world and become a renowned bard in their own right. Their journey is guided by a desire to share tales of heroism, inspire others through music and words, and uncover the mysteries of ancient lore. With their trusty instrument in hand and a heart full of wanderlust, they now traverse the realms, weaving tales and leaving a lasting mark wherever they go.
The more we know about the setting, the more we can personalize it.
Input: Please generate a very brief background for a Dungeons & Dragons character that's not a cliche and is suitable for a Forgotten Realms setting campaign.
Output:
Born in the bustling city of Waterdeep, this character was raised in a family of skilled artisans and craftsmen. From a young age, they showed a natural talent for magic, drawing the attention of a local wizard who became their mentor. Under their guidance, the character honed their arcane abilities and developed a fascination for ancient relics and forgotten lore. Eager to explore the rich history of the Forgotten Realms, they embarked on a journey as a relic hunter and adventurer, seeking out powerful artifacts and unraveling the secrets of the past. Driven by a thirst for knowledge and a desire to make their mark on the world, they now navigate the realms with a blend of magical prowess, cunning intellect, and a deep respect for the wonders that lie hidden in forgotten corners.
Input: Please generate a very brief background for a Dungeons & Dragons character that's not a cliche and is suitable for a Spelljammer campaign.
Output:
Born on the vibrant port city of Bral, this character hails from a family of skilled shipwrights and celestial navigators. Raised amidst the hustle and bustle of Spelljammer activity, they grew up with tales of spacefaring adventures and dreams of exploring the endless expanse of the phlogiston. With a natural affinity for tinkering and a thirst for discovery, they became an aspiring engineer and spelljammer pilot. Guided by their passion for exploration and a desire to unravel the mysteries of the stars, they set sail aboard their own spelljamming vessel, seeking out new worlds, strange phenomena, and ancient civilizations. With their ingenuity and navigational expertise, they navigate the vastness of wildspace, eager to make their mark on the uncharted realms and forge a legacy among the stars.
Input: Please generate a very brief background for a Dungeons & Dragons character that's not a cliche and is suitable for a Dark Sun campaign.
Output:
Born in the desolate wastelands of Athas, this character is a survivor in a world ravaged by magic and environmental devastation. Raised by a small tribe of nomadic hunters, they learned the harsh realities of survival from an early age. Trained in the art of stealth and resourcefulness, they became an adept scout and desert tracker. Enduring the brutal conditions of Athas, they developed a deep connection with the land and its primal forces. In their travels, they encountered the remnants of an ancient civilization, stumbling upon long-lost secrets and relics of forgotten power. Drawn to the mysteries of the past, they seek to uncover the truth about their world and harness the hidden magic that lies dormant within the deserts. With their keen instincts and adaptability, they navigate the treacherous sands, determined to forge their own destiny in a land where survival is the ultimate challenge.
...and now to push buttons and see what happens...
Input: Input: Please generate a very brief background for a Dungeons & Dragons character that's not a cliche and is suitable for a Warhammer Fantasy campaign.
Output:
Born into a family of peasants in the war-torn Empire, this character's life took an unexpected turn when they discovered a hidden talent for magic. Recognized by a secretive group of wizards, they were taken under their wing and trained in the arcane arts. However, their journey was far from typical, as they possessed a deep empathy for the common folk and a burning desire to protect them from the horrors of the Old World. Embracing their role as a mage, they dedicated themselves to the study of defensive and protective magic, honing their skills to shield the innocent from the chaos and destruction that plagues the land. With a keen intellect and an unwavering sense of justice, they venture into the grim darkness of the Warhammer world, wielding their magic not as a tool of destruction, but as a beacon of hope in the face of despair.

Born into a family of peasants in the war-torn Empire, this character's life took an unexpected turn when they discovered a hidden talent for magic. However, their journey was marred by a deep-seated anger that burned within them, fueled by a personal tragedy that they keep locked away from the world. Despite their outward demeanor of stoicism, they are constantly on edge, their anger simmering just beneath the surface. They have learned to channel this rage into their magic, harnessing its power to unleash devastating spells upon their enemies. Yet, they harbor an extreme secret that haunts them—a dark pact they made in their desperation to gain the strength needed to avenge their loss. Determined to keep this secret hidden, they embark on their quest in the treacherous world of Warhammer, driven by their anger, seeking justice and redemption while battling their inner demons.
One last revision: What is that secret?
The character's extreme secret is that in their darkest moment of despair, they made a pact with a malevolent Chaos entity in exchange for power. They carry within them a shard of that entity's essence, a corrupting force that threatens to consume them if discovered. The character lives in constant fear of their secret being exposed, as they know it would bring them not only shame but also the wrath of those who fight against Chaos. They are desperate to find a way to break free from this pact and rid themselves of the lingering taint that resides within, all while keeping their true nature hidden from those around them.

So just a bit of background, this kinda came to me one morning on my way to work and I wanted to pull it in as a DM to be a nice little help sidequest of sorts using a reflavor of an incubus, but I haven't quite figured it out, so here it is, kinda rewritten on the fly as a traumatizing backstory.
She didn't know his name, but none of the ladies of the brothel did. They only knew he could take the pain away.. The pain of jilted lovers, the pain of back alley secrets and of shame...all for the price of a few coin and to spend the night in his bed...
"So tell me something happy from when you were a child," he asked as he pulled her closer beneath the silken sheets.
"Sunflowers. I remember fields of them. Bright yellow in a sea of green. The warmth of the sun on my face. And Brid. That's my sister. I remember looking up at her face..." she said. She never told of the sunflowers... Or her sister in fact.
"Brid was older than me, and many of the boys fancied her. Especially Grais... " She continued...
"Grais was the merchant's son, and I loved him, though he only had eyes for her, and she fancied him..."
Her mood darkened in that moment... "I should have never made that deal..."
In the morning she awoke in bed, deeply relaxed, and her mind at ease. She couldn't remember the last time she slept that well.
He had already left, having written her a note thanking her for a wonderful evening, and of course, should she need his services again, she need only send the request..
His services? Wasn't it him that invited her to stay? What was it they had talked about?
It was only when she passed the vase of sunflowers that she realized something was wrong. What was it she was forgetting??
So yeah. A incubus who takes on willing partners. Well, willing of sorts. Everyone knows incubi/succubi are the sexy demons that drain the life from their victims, preferrably in the act of sex.
Well, What if the "life force" is actually memories and the actual life we live/remember?
The character in question doesn't know her past, but knows its tied to both this incubus character and she knows its a deal (with who or what?), and something to do with a love triangle in her past.
As a character, this is FANTASTIC, and it lets your DM decide how to play out discovering your past and what the deal was, and perhaps dropping clues to your past as you progress through the adventure.
As the DM, I might say she made a deal with a few to charm the husband and in return she had to give them something in return. Why not her firstborn son? Soon after agreeing, Grais seemed to feel less and less towards Brid, (this may have been somehow a curse on Brid's appearance) and he became more infatuated with your character. Shortly after the child was born, she decided not to give it up. Well, the fey stole the child anyhow, and cursed her so that her children henceforth shall be stillborn.
Her husband starts to lose his passion for her as they fought and fought, and the fact that she stopped being intimate with him (terrified of the curse), and the strain of the loss of a child hung over both of them. The loving relationship turned sour, and died, and before she sought this incubus's company, they had separated for a about 5 years.
So now she's got to find he incubus to see if she can get her memories back (or come to terms without them), and find the fey to get back her son.
(I also like fey settings, so....)
EDIT: also, memories are tied to emotion, so your character has problems feeling certain things, like love and remorse, and the feelings that may be tied to what was taken away. have fun with that. :)
Had a bad life and is now adjusting to a good life!

I was going to offer something similar and this is actually on point. I have a recurring LE/NE Necromancer that dances between PC and BBEG but their backstory has always been kept totally secret to other PCs, and even some players to maintain a mystique.
To summarize, the character began as a son of a prominent political family with a widespread talent for magic. The son was sent to an academy to become another proficient Wizard in the family, but eventually left the school to pursue the higher purpose of the Divine. While serving as a temple acolyte, he found himself in the wrong place and time as a powerful artifact took control over a bishop in their private study. The acolyte defended themself with their arcane background, stunning the elder priest who mysteriously died later. Over following weeks, inquisitors came to the temple to investigate the matter. Eventually, questions turned to inquisition, then to outright torture demanding confession of murder and stealing a now-missing evil relic of power. Finally, the acolyte reached their breaking point and called for whatever power would help them. Months later, the church's walls stood ruined and dark, long since forgetting the sound of living voices and activity.
So, skipping ahead years later to the PC, we have a wizard with a terribly scarred face and blind eye (a result of repeated attempted exorcism), thinning white hair, and unknown other marks of abuses under a black robe. Despite the visage, he carries an air of complete superiority, spite, and contempt. Mention of gods or goddesses draw derisive remarks. In a physical manifestation of a god complex, the wizard travels under the guise of a traveling caretaker for the sick and cursed, accompanied by several heavily clothed "lepers" (zombies) which seem to swell in number with every town he visits.
