so, basically i have a campaign idea where mystra's soul has leaked from eternity into a mortal host, (a character i made on this website) named Tiera.
somehow magic is used to resurrect mystra through tiera and 10-12 lvl spells are unbound allowing an evil entity to free itself with such spells and rampage across the world
i need to think of what entity is imprisoned, what resurrects mystra, how she’s in tiera, and other stuff like that. any ideas y’all have would be appreciated
The evil entity could be the lost god Moander, an ancient deity of rot, corruption, and decay originating from the lost magic empire of Netheril that throughout Toril's history has been rumoredly destroyed, only to come back on many occasions.
The ultra-high magic spellcasting could rot the Weave that hold magic togheter. The Weave, controlled by Mystryl or one of her successors such as Mystra now, is a way through which raw magic is accessed, tapped into and used by casters of magic and the way in which magic presents itself to beings for their use, and it flow throughout the world, touching almost every corner of existence.
The use of such spell could corrupt the large area around which it was cast, rotting all things living from flora to flauna all left decayed as well as the Weave, leaving behind dead-magic zones.
Tiera could be a vessel from which Mystra wants to move into Faerun and restore such zone while locating what has come out of imprisonement, understanding what the entity is, and stop it before it does too much damage to the land, the living and the Weave.
additional idea a wizard is planning to replace mystra with eight chosen mortals who just so happen to be him and his friends so the wizards could actually screw up the ritual and kickstart resurrection process
if i say something inflammatory the intention is not to trigger an emotional response and the fact that it does so is purely accidental and I sincerely apologise if it does
Stealing Mystra's power would require the use of magic beyond 9th level, particularly, the effect of the 12th level spell, Karsus's Avatar. It was cast, precisely once, when Karsus tried to steal Mystryl's (the original goddess of magic) power to defeat the phaerimm. Karsus could not handle the power, and the weave began to unravel, so Mystryl sacrificed herself to block Karsus's access to magic. This caused magic to temporarily fail. The goddess re-incarnated as Mystra, and instituted a ban on spells over 9th level. She's supposed to have personally destroyed or scattered about the cosmos all the notes on Karsus's avatar.
As far as being reborn, the canon is, that she has been reborn already and is back in charge of the weave.
That all being said, if in your realms Mystra is not alive again, here's how you might go about it. Your wizard and his cabal have tracked down the notes to recreate Karsus's Avatar. To bypass the ban, the cabal of wizards is using some manner of circle magic to power the casting of Karsus's avatar. According to Ed Greenwood, the weave is /not/ the only form or manner of using magic in the realms, it's simply the easiest and most reliable. There are canon means to cast higher than 9th level spells after mystra's ban as well, elven high magic being one of them. IIRC, all of those means require multiple casters, which your story has. So there you have it; your wizards are trying to use circle magic to cast Karsus's avatar to steal power. Something goes wrong, perhaps your Tiera interferes with the ritual and instead of taking the power themselves, the interference causes Mystra to be reborn.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
