Is WotC completely discarding the Todd Lockwood dragon designs, or are the new ones meant to represent dragons endemic to the Greyhawk setting while the old ones are endemic to the Forgotten Realms setting? I really like the redesigns for the metallic dragons, with the gold dragon hearkening back to 1E's serpentine design, but with the exception of the black dragon the chromatic dragon redesigns really miss the mark for me. They look too clean and streamlined, and there's talk of them being specifically designed to be easier for a generative art program to produce art of.
I'm okay with them keeping both the Todd Lockwood designs and the reimagined dragons, but it doesn't sit right to have the old ones thrown away. If their new dragon book clarified that dragons look different all across the multiverse, I'd be thrilled, and if they made new art of the 1E red dragon that appeared on the cover of the 1E AD&D Monster Manual, I'd be elated!
Definitely the brass dragon. They have always been kind of in the shadow of gold dragons by being yet another fire spewing dragon but with a smaller CR. They need something that makes them stand out more.
Where’s the option for if I like them all so far? I thought 5e dragons being pallets swaps of one another was really disappointing, and I’m glad they are actually making the dragons distinct now, I hope that also carries through to their stat blocks https://xender.vip/ .
Dragons were given unique characteristics in 3E to help differentiate them from one another, possibly as a visual aid for colorblind people. For example, green dragons have a large frill and no horns, Red dragons have two prominent back-swept horns and a pair of fluted membranes on the sides of their heads, White dragons have a large crest on top of their heads and have sunken-in faces, and black dragons have emaciated, skull-like faces with front-swept horns.
I'm not sure why you thought they were just pallet swaps unless you started with first or second edition.
