I am making a homunculus servent, but I started to wonder, where does it get its energy from? At the moment mine is a humanoid, 2.5 feet tall. It is basically human but uses a steampunk prosthetic arm and leg. It has a furnace built into its chest, and that was going to be my idea on how it gets idea, and it would use the steam to make the heart beat, witch would be made of the stone. But it doesn't change the fact I'm not too sure on where they get their energy. Is it like Fullmetal Alchemist and the philosopher's stone? Or does the energy come from a place like where the items from a bag of holding go?
Are you an artificer making it with the artificer infusion "Homunculus Servant"?
There isn't any common consensus or lore definition on where the homunculus gets its energy or animation from. The only thing of note in Tasha's (I don't have the new eberron book so I don't know if they significantly changed it in 2024 rules) is that it mentions that you must infuse a gem or crystal worth 100gp, which "serves as the creature's heart."
Other than that, it is totally up to you how exactly your homunculus is animated. Something mechanical might be powered by electricity or magic, while something more flesh-and-blood might be powered through Necromancy of some kind.

Just for the record, in the new version it's now a spell that you cast rather than being part of the magic item creation process. It still requires a 100gp gem (it's the spell's material component) and still leaves the details of its appearance up to the caster.
I think you can make your own lore. It can come from the Weave like any spellcasting. I think of it as the energy as coming from the spellcaster and then being captured in the gem, like a battery, for this particular case.
